Biography

Gabriela Barnes is a dynamic communications professional with a strong foundation in education, marketing, and project management.

A proud African American and Mexican-American first-generation college student, Gabriela earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature with a double major in cultural theory and English education from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. It was at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee that she became a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. She has received her master’s degree in communications and a MBA certificate in marketing from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

Passionate about mentorship, leadership, and community engagement, Gabriela has contributed to many local initiatives that support low-income students of color. Her commitment to social impact, coupled with her expertise in strategic communication, positions her as a transformative leader dedicated to fostering positive change in her community.

Main responsibilities at Carthage

As a student success advisor, Gabriela is a full-time advising and student success professional who facilitates students’ successful entry and transition to Carthage. She serves as a cultural navigator and supports students in overcoming obstacles.

Favorite thing about working at Carthage

“I love the architecture of the campus buildings and the energy everyone brings forward. It’s all hands on deck at Carthage; everyone is willing to support students, faculty, and staff. Plus, the lake is pretty cool!”
